This book is a difference maker and is the one book that I would recommend to any professional, young or old. Everyone will face ethical dilemmas in his or her professional career. High-Performance Ethics is a roadmap through those difficult times, as well as a reassurance to leaders that it does pay to do the right thing - always. This book made such a difference in my life that, as Predident-elect of the South Carolina Public Relations Society of America, an organization that lives by a strict code of ethics, I immediately invited Mr. Cantrell to come speak to our members. A must read.

There's a lot of books out there talking about ethics, and most of it is surrealistic. You couldn't apply it in real organizations - you couldn't even apply it in the ivory towers where they're writing this stuff. There's also a lot out there on performance. Some of it even gives a nod to "being ethical." But this book is totally different. It's a book about ethics that will actually help you perform at higher levels. It has insights for individuals and for leaders of organizations. I really like the approach the authors take in going back and forth, one laying out the concepts and the other illustrating it with stories from his career. An enjoyable and profitable read.

On a day of June 2007, I flipped through as many business management books as possible -- on 8 fully loaded 6-foot Barnes & Noble bookshelves - because I was desperately in need of professional books to help me with my job. 60 minutes passed by, I couldn't find a book that I felt worth my money and my time commitment to study at home. I murmured to myself, "God, tell me which book I should buy.... my eyes are getting blurred and my legs are tired." a newly published High Performance Ethics suddenly stood out right in front of me. I slothfully opened to the middle of the book because I was too tired to start from the beginning. I was immediately engaged with Cantrell's perspectives on how to deal with various types of leaders, wise and especially unwise, when we have to submit to their authorities due to the hierarchy. I paid for the book at the cashier literally seconds after I first saw it on the shelves.

The layout of the book presents an interesting juxtaposition of coherent and convincing theories with Cantrell's real life experiences during his time as a CEO of an international business organization. Cantrell and Lucas are not only great writers but fantastic teachers. I enjoy so much gaining solid knowledge through reader-friendly writing style. I am well related to Cantrell's insisting on the importance of having both competence and characters as a High Performance Ethics (HPE) Leader. I couldn't agree with him enough because I have witnessed at many workplaces the negative impacts by people having either competence or characters but not both.

Through reading, by surprise, I realized that Cantrell is actually a Christian and a son of a local minister. I myself am a 3rd-generation Christian and a lay music minister for many years. However, the older I am, the more dissatisfied I become towards the church culture. In my observation, many Christians have been drawing an extremely bright-color line between Faith and Profession. On one side of the spectrum, many Christians are with little or no professional trainings (or intentionally avoiding high-level professional trainings). They quoted that it is harder for rich people to enter the Kingdom of God than a camel going through the eye of a needle. On the other side, many houses of worship are polluted by skilled Christians with undesirable characters.

Cantrell's life experience shows me that long term success is birthed by in-depth understanding of true prosperity and it is attainable and can be expected. He said "Prosperity, for those who haven't been given everything from the beginning, is a by-product of passion, commitment, and good thinking - and a willingness to limit desires. "The leader who basically focuses on himself or herself is going to mislead, "warns Peter Drucker. (p.208)" I personally was very encouraged by the book and therefore strongly recommend it to any potential readers.

This is nothing more than the advice you can get for free by attending church. Please do not even bother to buy this antiquated material. The audio feedback on the CD is horrible and Zig Ziglar has a tone of voice that will give you a headache after about five minutes. In fact, I got this CD for free by attending a all day seminar, which feature Zig Ziglar as one of the guest speakers, for $30 dollars. The seminar was marginal at best. Don't waste you money on this!

I enjoyed the CD program, 5 KEYS TO IGNITING MOTIVATION &
SUCCESS--written and read by Zig Ziglar.

For those of you not familiar with Ziglar's work, check him out . . . I've
been following his career and reading all his books since I was
in my 20s . . . it was then that I was first introduced to his classic,
SEE YOU AT THE TOP, one of my favorites on the subject
of what's needed to get ahead in life ("you can get anything you want,
so long as you help enough other people get what they want").

In 5 KEYS, one of his latest efforts, I was especially impressed with
his discussion of "Golden rule relationships" . . . he contends that
if relationships with those you love are good, then so is life.

I gained many valuable tidbits from listening to his ideas; among them:
* Ask your spouse: How can we meet each other's needs better?

* People pay more attention to what you do than to what you say.

* Wake your children as you do when they were babies--slowly and
gently.

* Being the right person is more important than marrying the right
person.

* Don't just bring your bride something for her birthday. Bring her
something on the 23rd of June just because it's the 23rd of June.

Ziglar is now in his 80s and has been married to "the redhead," as
he affectionately calls his wife, for a long time . . . I still am amazed
as to how much I can learn from him.

This work is available as both a book, a set of 6 CDs and apparently as a single CD. I have both the book and the 6 CD set.

I found the CDs to be absolutely fantastic. The book is a great reference after the CDs, but if I had read the book instead of the CDs, I would have lost out on a lot. When I read the book, it feels, well, typical. But when I listen to Mahan speak, it is riveting. I myself am considered a strong speaker, and am very critical of others abilities, so I do not say this lightly. The first CD is the hardest to listen to, but after that, it is GREAT.

The CDs taught me how to go from a problem statement or solution idea and quantify how we will show success against that once we implement our idea. Many of you may have a technique already that can take you from a problem to a set of measures that can show improvement, but I did not.

The funny thing is that I am not really into sales. Yet this book is one of my best tools in my kit. Not for sales, but for DEPLOYING solutions and managing complex projects. It's guidance is extremely useful in requirements management and scope management for any project imaginable. It helps the team show the customer we are interested in their success more than in their list of features, and to ensure that what we are building truly adds value. If you have ever experienced scope creep or requirements volatility, these CDs have techniques to help.

I strongly recommend this CD set to anyone who needs to prove the value of a solution, especially if they don't yet have a technique to do so.

As a final thought, here is a great story:

A client had one of the CDs in her car which she had bought on my recommendation. Her husband borrowed the car and the CD came on. He was confused, but immediately found himself sucked in due to Mahan's excellent speaking ability. He got to work with all these ideas in his head and went to a high powered meeting (for which he was the ranking executive). He apparently used the techniques he had just learned and was able to solve some serious problems and close a huge deal that they'd been struggling with for days. When he got home he said to his wife, "what is that CD in your car?" Needless to say, he listened to the whole set too.

A great book for selling large deals, March 1, 2002

There are literally thousands of books on selling and most leave you with the feeling that you need to shower after you have read them. This one does not. Lets get real has a reality about it and a discussion of a simple process that reenforces all the things you knew about selling. The book hits the right blend of anedotal stories -- so you can see how it would apply to you and discussion of the process elements -- so you can figure out how to apply it yourself. This is no Zig Ziglar book -- this is something I want to conciously try to use every time.

The book is very clearly written and highly usable, breaking each aspect of the approach into small digestable chunks. Its something you can read and more importantly re-read/refresh yourself easily.

There is one limitation of the book. It seems to be geared more toward longer multiple call sales cycles, rather than transaction selling. At least that is the way I read it. I could not see my local car dealer selling this way -- although I wish they would.

This book is one that is going into my frequently read shelf. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who is looking to build commercial relationship with a client.

A way to do "this" and not be sleazy, slick or cheesy, August 12, 2001

It wasn't until I read this book that I felt anything positive about being in "sales". I had done it in my past and I was about to do it again and thank god for this book or I'd still be uncomfortable and tossing and turning in my sleep.

We need a new word, "sales", as this book so aptly puts it, is something you do to someone else. You "sell" them on something. Nobody wants to be sold, we all avoid salespeople and we all feel stupid selling other people on something. And those who do enjoy "selling" someone are almost always in pursuit of their own "victory", oif beating the other person into buying from them, overcoming obstacles, leaping hurdles and getting the BIG CLOSE.

They aren't really focused on the other person, an urge I sometimes fall prey to myself. Our culture makes competition and personal victories very seductive, it is what we talk about, sports teams are rarely congratulated on their effort or fine play unless they win. We view so many things as black and white, which is not natural, throughout human history you can see cooperation as a dominant and prudent way to survive and thrive, not competition (see a dense, but brilliant book on this "Nonzero : The Logic of Human Destiny" by Robert Wright). Sales is a no-win game for everyone.

Maybe there isn't any word, the "trick", the "gimmick" that this book extols is genuiness, simply being real, if you will. You meet someone, you listen, you ask some good questions so that you understand them well and what they are trying to accomplish, if you think there might be a way that you or your company can help them you offer it to them, if not, you wish them well and part graciously.

What is that? Being human? Being real? "being real" has a vaguely cheesy sound to it too, my only complaint about this book is it's title which can turn people off before they even open it. Again maybe there is no word. Many of us will simply go out and meet people and listen well and feel good about what we are doing and be personally successful as well...or are those the same thing anyway :-)

The real value of this book is some excellent exercises you can do in a meeting with someone, things to really challenge you to break out of old patterns, very, very deeply ingrained patterns.
